Neighbourhood Watch

Thankfully we live in a county with a very low crime rate. However, OWRA encourages you to be vigilant and report to the Police and OWRA any incidents or suspicious activities that you see on the Estate.

If you are unfortunate enough to suffer a burglary or other crime please report it immediately to the Police, and take the time to inform OWRA - Committee members.

ADVICE NOTES FROM SURREY POLICE - SEPTEMBER 2011

Jewellery Distraction Thefts

Women approaching people out shopping, forcibly placing gold chains around their necks and rings on their fingers asking if they would like to purchase them but at the same time take the person's own jewellery off and steal it. Suspects are described as white women in their late 20s of Eastern European origin and of slim build..

Crime Protection Survey scam

Phone calls allegedly to conduct a crime protection survey, perhaps offering a free alarm system, asking for personal details and maybe implying this is with the approval and/or knowledge of the police. The Police do not endorse any such company. They are suspected of at the least really selling an expensive monitoring service or at the worst identity theft.

Bank Card Scam

Phone calls to the victim allegedly from their bank to ‘check’ card details, including the pin number, then informing them that they need a new bank card. The victim is advised that someone will be visiting them shortly to collect their old card. A person, dressed to look like a courier, then arrives at the door to take the card.

BURGLARY IN MIZEN WAY - SEPTEMBER 2010

There was a burglary in Mizen Way on Friday 24th September at about 8:30pm, whilst he owners were out.  Fortunately the burglar alarm went off and this caused the perpetrator to flee.  A witness saw a youg male on a bicycle leaving the area.

WHEELIE BIN 'STEAM CLEAN' SCAM - SEPTEMBER 2010

Reports came in from residents who were approached by a male who offered to clean and sanitise their dustbins at a minimal annual charge.  I contacted the Surrey Police today (15 September 2010) who confirmed the reports and furthermore informed me that the male had been arrested and is currently on police bail. The CID were contacted, who in turn liaised with Trading Standards who were aware of this person and are currently conducting their own investigation into his activities. The Surrey Police has asked me to pass the following message onto all residents of the estate: “We would continue to remind local residents to be vigilant and aware of these types of scams involving rogue traders and bogus callers”.

The Surrey Police have sent a five page document about Bogus Callers and how to handle them.

Neighbourhood Watch - November 2010

From Mark Howells PC 4198

Following a number of concerned calls to me I would like to inform you all of a security company working in this area again. The Safe and Secure or SAS security company have been reported to have made several approaches by telephone to residents in Elmbridge. This company is a registered security company but has been subjected to a number of Trading Standard actions.

I would strongly advise against entering into any form of contract whatsoever with this company until you have spoken with Surrey Trading Standards.

SURREY - CAST IRON DRAIN COVERS - JUNE 2010

There was a report on the local television news this week about the theft of hundreds of cast iron drain covers in Surrey, which cost a great deal of money to replace. We are concerned in case the Estate might be targeted as well, as the cost of replacement would have to be met from Estate funds. Please would residents be vigilant on the Estate, and if they notice anything suspicious, make a note of vehicle registration numbers and report it to the police and to the committee as soon as possible - Many thanks.
